A full sweep removes creosote, soot, debris, and any animal nesting material from the firebox, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, and flue. Creosote is the real fire risk. It forms when wood burns at low temperatures or the flue is too large for the appliance. Stage 1 creosote (light and flaky) brushes out in one visit. Stage 3 (tar-like and glazed) requires chemical treatment and multiple visits.
We use commercial-grade HEPA vacuums and drop cloths. The inside of your home should not smell like soot after we leave. Most Houston homeowners need a sweep once per season if they burn regularly, or at minimum annually even for occasional use.
Chimney Inspection: Levels 1, 2, and 3
Level 1 is a visual check of accessible parts. You get this with every routine cleaning. Level 2 includes a video camera scan of the flue interior and is required after any storm, fire, property purchase, or fuel type change. Level 3 involves opening walls or removing components and is only needed when hidden damage is suspected.

Animal and Bird Nest Removal
Chimney swifts are a federally protected migratory bird that nest inside uncapped Houston chimneys from late April through October. You cannot legally remove nesting swifts or their eggs during nesting season. Once the birds migrate in October, we clean the nest and install a cap before spring.

Does a gas fireplace need to be swept?

The burner, pilot assembly, and thermocouple need periodic inspection. A gas appliance with a blocked flue can backdraft carbon monoxide into the living space. Annual service is worth the cost.

Can Houston's humidity really damage a chimney?
Absolutely. Brick and mortar are porous. Houston averages 65-75 percent relative humidity for much of the year. Water works into joints, then the rare winter frost expands those cracks. Over several years, mortar joints open up enough for water to reach the interior wythe of the chimney. This leads to spalling, efflorescence, and eventually structural failure at the crown and upper courses.
What happens during a chimney sweep appointment?

What is a damper and do I need to repair mine?
The damper is the metal flap above the firebox that controls airflow. When it fails to close fully, conditioned air escapes year-round, which matters more in Houston's cooling-heavy climate than anywhere else. A stuck-open damper in July bleeds the efficiency of your HVAC system. A stuck-closed damper during a fire is dangerous.
